Hear from the Winners of the Literacy Promotion “READ and WIN” Competition

On behalf of the Library Advocacy Group, I unveil with gladness, the winners of the Literacy Promotion “READ and WIN” Competition.

It is pertinent to reiterate that the competition was a challenging one for the participants, as well as the reviewers. The participants had just one week to summarise a novel, Man of the People by veteran writer Chinua Achebe, in a maximum of four pages, and an article, Do You Know What ‘A Luta Continua’ Means? by Pius Adesanmi, in not more than one page. However, against all odds, the under-listed distinguished themselves among other participants.

Below are their unaltered answers to questions asked them after they were announced winners.

Happy Reading!

“Reading is something I have always loved doing. As a Nigerian youth , I am interested in the personal development of youths so as to position them to move the society forward. One of the ways to do such, being by developing their mental capacity to learn and become better. This competition aimed at achieving this, and that formed part of my motivation to participate”

What motivated you to participate in the competition?

“A Man of the People by Chinua is one book I’ve always wanted to read because of what I’ve heard and read about it, so it was the motivation I needed to participate in the competition and I really enjoyed every sentence of the text.”

Prior to the competition, did you read any among the books summarised?

“No”

Describe what your experience was with the competition

“It was a little bit tasking to summarize a whole book in four page because I didn’t know what to leave out or what to include, but it was a welcome challenge all the same. Before this competition, I knew next to nothing about A Luta Continua but now I’m proud to say I belong to the class of very few Nigerian youth who know what they are struggling against.”

How do you feel being a winner?

“Euphoric is the word that describes how I feel. I didn’t set out with plans to win as I only planned to read the book and had to challenge myself to do the summary so I am surprised as well. But I’m very happy and say thank you to the organizers of this competition for giving me the chance to read and win just because I read. I hope this encourages others to embrace reading too for the immeasurable benefits it has. We should all know that the brains get hungry too and the only way to feed it is by reading.”
