LIBRARIES, ACCESS TO INFORMATION, AND THE 2017 WORLD HUMAN RIGHTS DAY

Seeking and receiving information is a fundamental human right as stipulated by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states:

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.

Undoubtedly, libraries provide equitable access to information, and information empowers individuals to think, imagine, pursue their dreams, and achieve in all conceivable ways. Very importantly, information drives the quest and struggle for the enshrinement of human rights in all communities and situations. Libraries support this by ensuring access to information for citizens through acquiring, archiving and digitizing in all formats, information resources on human right abuses, repressive governance at all levels, liberation movements, and proper standards of rights for everyone. Libraries also provide diverse resources and assist many in acquiring skills that will help them participate actively in governance at all levels.

Today, as the world celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Library Advocacy Group has compiled posts and resources with a hashtag (#EndSars) that has been trending on the Nigerian space of social media, as well as on national and international dailies. #EndSars represents the views of many who believe that an arm of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) –- Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) has been trampling on the human rights of the Nigerian people. The resources below embody the different viewpoints of people, including the NPF, on SARS and the way forward to ensure that the human rights of Nigerians are respected and protected.
